Complaints after a previous breast operation: first clarify the cause

    Published

New pain, hardness, swelling or a change in breast shape should be evaluated by a doctor. Further intervention is not automatically the first step. The cause determines whether examination, imageing, treatment or a planned revision is necessary.

Maybe you are no longer satisfied with the shape. Maybe something suddenly changed. These situations have different levels of urgency. A planned second opinion does not replace acute care.

When you shouldn't wait for a normal appointment

If you have shortness of breath, chest pain, circulatory collapse or acute, severe deterioration, you need medical help immediately. In Switzerland, dial 144. Then don't wait for a message from a practice.

Rapidly increasing one-sided breast swelling, severe increasing pain, fever, significant redness or wound discharge also require a prompt medical assessment. Contact the responsible treatment team or an appropriate medical contact point. The urgency is assessed individually.

Describe the reason for your visit in more detail

Note what change occurred: pain, hardness, shape, location, or sensation. How long has it existed? Has it become more pronounced? Is it on one side or both? Is there a connection to movement or a specific event?

This information helps to classify the process. They are not an invitation to self-diagnosis. Visible asymmetry can have causes other than a newly swollen breast, and general pain cannot be reliably attributed to an implant from a distance.

    What causes can be investigated

After breast surgery, scars, changes in position and changes in the tissue can play a role. With implants, capsular contracture, implant damage or fluid accumulation are possible issues.

However, the investigation should not be limited to the previous operation. New lumps or skin and nipple changes also require medical evaluation. Not every new complaint is necessarily caused by the implant.

Pay special attention if swelling develops later

New persistent swelling or fluid collection around an implant that occurs long after the procedure should be specifically investigated. Rare implant-associated diseases require a differentiated investigation depending on the findings.

This does not mean that all swelling is such a condition. What is crucial is that it is not dismissed without examination as a purely aesthetic change. An illness cannot be confirmed or ruled out from an article.

What helps with a second opinion

Bring the implant record, previous surgical reports and existing imageing. Information about previous bleeding, infections or corrections is also important. If documents are missing, say so; You don't need to know every technical detail.

Formulate two separate goals: Which complaint should be clarified and what, if any, change in form do you want? Medical treatment and aesthetic planning can be related, but should be clearly differentiated.

    When to discuss a revision

If the findings and complaints are clarified, corrective surgery may be an option. Depending on the situation, the options range from treating the tissue or implant pocket to changing or removing an implant.

A revision is often not a simple repeat of the first operation. Scars, tissue situation and previous interventions influence the possibilities. Ask to have an explanation of the proposed plan, its limitations, and any possible further treatment needs.

    Take general complaints seriously

Some people with implants report fatigue, problems concentrating, or other general symptoms. These complaints deserve medical clarification. However, a causal connection with implants cannot be determined across the board, and removal does not guarantee improvement.

Ask about collaboration with other disciplines if multiple possible causes exist. An open conversation should identify uncertainty and still offer a sensible next step in the investigation.

Risks and questions for your consultation

A revision can also cause bleeding, infection, wound healing problems, changes in sensation or an unsatisfactory result. Therefore, ask the following questions:

    • Which cause is confirmed and which is still unclear?
    • What examination is needed before an operation?
    • What can a revision improve and what cannot be safely fixed?
    • What risks arise from my previous interventions?
    • What option is there to initially proceed without surgery?

    Frequently asked questions

Does an implant always have to be removed if there is pain?

No. First, the cause must be clarified.

Can I come to another practice after an operation?

A second opinion can be useful. Existing documents make the assessment easier.

Does an abnormal finding automatically mean a revision?

No. Treatment depends on the cause, urgency and individual consideration.
