Excess skin after weight loss: Finding a realistic next step
Published
Excess skin may remain after significant weight loss. A lifting operation can change selected areas, but leaves scars and requires individual planning. Weight development, health status and possible complaints must be taken into account beforehand.
Maybe you're happy with your weight loss but still feel limited by a skin fold. These two feelings do not contradict each other. A consultation can help identify your most important goals without requiring immediate surgery.

What exactly is affecting you?
Excess skin can affect the appearance and, for some people, disrupt everyday life. Describe as specifically as possible whether it is about clothing, movement, a fold in the skin or recurring irritation.
If you have inflamed, painful or open areas of skin, a medical assessment is important first. An aesthetic discussion does not replace their treatment. Record when symptoms arise and what previous measures have helped.
Why weight progression is important
If further significant weight loss is planned, the skin situation may change again. An initial finding that is as stable as possible therefore makes planning easier. Which period makes sense for you will be discussed individually.
It's not just the number on the scale that counts. Previous illnesses, medications and the type of weight loss you have had so far influence the preparation. After bariatric surgery, nutritional status and possible deficiencies may be particularly relevant; These questions should be clarified with the responsible treating person.
Lifting and liposuction are different tasks
Liposuction reduces fatty tissue but does not remove significant excess skin. If the focus is on the skin, lift must be considered as a separate option. The treatment is adjusted depending on the region and extent.
A tummy tuck may be an option for the abdomen. Other regions may require different procedures and may require a separate technical assessment. Not every theoretically possible lift is automatically part of a practice's range of services. Ask about the specific scope and options available.
Why there are often several steps to discuss
If different regions are affected, a single major operation is not necessarily the right solution. The scope, duration of the operation, health status and recovery must be taken into account together.
Prioritise the region that has the greatest impact on your everyday life. Let us explain to you whether a phased approach makes sense and what changes could be expected after the first step. A comprehensible sequence is more helpful than a general package.
Scars are part of the decision
Lifts exchange excess skin for a new contour and surgical scars. Where the scars are and how long they can be depends on the findings. Their future visibility cannot be predicted with certainty.
Discuss clothing, activities, and your willingness to accept scars. A smaller scar may be associated with a more limited change. This consideration should be made clear before the operation, not after.
Risks and recovery
Possible risks include impaired wound healing, infection, postoperative bleeding, fluid accumulation, asymmetries and changes in sensation. In extensive procedures, thrombosis and embolism are relevant. Further correction may be necessary.
Recovery doesn't just mean taking a break from sport. Travel, shopping, work and care obligations must also be taken into account. Ask about the necessary check-ups and how help should be organised if multiple regions are being treated.
Questions for your consultation
- Is my weight sufficiently stable for planning?
- What health or nutrition-related questions need to be clarified beforehand?
- Which region should be treated first and why?
- What scars would be necessary to achieve my main goal?
- What speaks against a combination of several interventions?
Frequently asked questions
Can any excess skin be removed without surgery?
For severe excess, reliable complete correction without skin removal is not guaranteed. The options depend on the findings.
Is lifting a method for further weight loss?
No. The goal is to treat the body contour or excess skin.
Is the treatment paid for by insurance?
This cannot be promised across the board. Requirements and, if necessary, a cost approval must be clarified individually in advance.
