Breast lift or implant: Which change do you want?

An implant adds breast volume. A breast lift changes the shape and raises the nipple position if necessary. If volume loss and sagging are present at the same time, a combination may be an option. Which option is right for you depends on the findings and your goals.
Maybe you like your breast size, but your breasts are lower than before. Perhaps what is missing after pregnancy is the fullness. Or you want a larger breast overall. These differences are more important than the question of which procedure is currently being offered most frequently.

Consider volume and position separately
During the consultation, it helps to break down your desire into two parts: What should be fuller and what should sit higher? Cup size alone does not answer these questions. The nipple position, skin quality and distribution of the existing tissue are also included in the examination.
Describe as specifically as possible what bothers you in everyday life. Is it about the silhouette in clothing, differences between the two sides or the shape without a bra? In this way, an operation goal can be formulated that goes beyond simply specifying the size.
What an implant can do
A breast that has descended significantly cannot reliably be corrected with a larger implant alone. This does not automatically remove the need for a lift. Discuss explicitly what an implant alone could achieve and where its limitations lie.
A significantly sunken breast cannot be reliably corrected with a larger implant alone. This does not automatically make necessary lift unnecessary. Therefore, expressly discuss what changes an implant alone could achieve and what the limits are.
What a breast lift changes
During a breast lift, the skin covering is adjusted and the existing tissue is reshaped. It can be useful if the size is basically right, but you would like a different position or contour. The extent and course of the scars depend on the findings.
A lift does not specifically add additional volume. “Firmer” does not automatically mean that the desired fullness is achieved in the upper chest area. This expectation should be discussed prior to the procedure.
When to consider a combination
A combination can make sense if both a higher position and more volume are desired and medically justifiable. It must be clarified whether the steps should be carried out in one operation or separately.
Ask for a clear explanation: Which step solves which problem? What are the advantages of the proposed order? What additional burden arises? A combination is a possibility, not a general standard for every altered breast.
Risks and long-term planning
Possible risks include postoperative bleeding, infection, impaired wound healing, scars, asymmetries and changes in sensation. During a lift, circulatory problems can affect the nipple. Implants bring additional risks such as capsular contracture, changes in position or damage to the implant.
Implants are not guaranteed products for life. Checks and subsequent interventions may become necessary. Pregnancies and major weight changes can change the shape of the breasts again. A further desire to have children should therefore be included in the consultation, as should the question of the possible ability to breastfeed.
Questions for your appointment
- What would an implant improve in my case, and what would it not improve?
- Can a lift without an implant achieve my goal?
- What scars should I expect with the different options?
- Which check-ups and possible follow-up operations are part of the planning?
- What speaks in favour of waiting or against intervention?
Frequently asked questions
Can a larger implant replace a lift?
Often not if there is pronounced sagging. The decision is made based on the findings, not just the desire for fewer scars.
Is a lift possible without an implant?
Yes. The examination will determine whether the existing volume is sufficient for your goal.
Do I have to decide at the first conversation?
No. You are allowed to examine the options, ask questions and decide against surgery.
